Effingham, Bookham and Fetcham Christmas Charity Post
Michael Agius – Chairman CCP
Thank you to everyone who made use of the Christmas Charity Post [CCP] again this year. Whilst the value of stamps sold was down about 6% on last year, we still sold £3,391 worth and delivered over 10,000 cards during December. A very good result.
Thanks again to the six Area Managers, their volunteers who sell stamps and deliver cards, as well as all the shops who sell stamps and act as posting points. Two thirds of all stamps are sold at local shops.Click here to read more of this report
The Area Managers have a very interesting time getting some cards to their destinations, particularly if the card only has a name and no address on the envelope, or if the card is completely misaddressed. This is where their local knowledge gained over many years comes into play. In carrying out some final detective work on cards that the Managers couldn’t find homes for, I particularly want to thank all those who gave me advice on who or where the cards might be for, by answering my posts on Nextdoor. In the end we found homes for all the cards posted
Keeping a small amount for costs that will need to be expended prior to next Christmas, the Committee have agreed that the £3,000 will be distributed to four charities, split as follows :
- £750 to Aprender, a charity based at Bookham Baptist Church involved in the education of Syrian Refugees in Lebanon https://www.aprender.co.uk/
- £750 to Practical Action who have a project to help farmers in Zimbabwe which will be matched by the Government https://practicalaction.org/
- £750 to Mary’s Meals ‘Double The Love’ appeal which will be matched by the Government https://www.marysmeals.org.uk/ Mary’s Meals feed some 300,000 children world wide.
- £750 to Medecins sans Frontieres for their continuing work in Yemen https://www.msf.org/yemen
The two Government matched projects will add another £1500 to the amounts dispersed, giving a wonderful total of £4,500.
Our volunteers are a very dedicated group. They keep raising significant funds for people living in developing countries who are unable to work their way out of poverty without being given a helping hand. Once again many thanks to all of them and to all of you for using the Christmas Charity Post once again.
One last thought. The Managing Committee and their helpers are all getting older and we could do with some young blood. If anyone reading this would be prepared to help in the run up to Christmas, please contact me on email@example.com.
